Unit 126 — to, at, in and into

A. to

We say go / come / travel (etc.) to a place or event.

For example:

ExpressionExpressionExpression
go to Chinago to workcome to my house
go back to Italygo to the bankdrive to the airport
return to Londongo to a partybe taken to hospital

Examples:

  • When are your friends going back to Italy? (not going back in Italy)

  • Three people were injured in the accident and taken to hospital.

1. Welcome to / a trip to / a visit to / on my way to

In the same way we say:

  • Welcome to ...
  • a trip to ...
  • a visit to ...
  • on my way to ...

Examples:

  • Welcome to our country!(not Welcome in)

  • We had to cancel our trip to Paris.

movement → destination

I’m going to Shanghai.

She drove to the airport.

A → to → B

2. to 和 in / at

Compare to (for movement) and in / at (for position):

  • They are going to France. but They live in France.

  • Can you come to the party? but I’ll see you at the party.

movement

go to France

position

live in France

come to the party

see you at the party

3. to vs in / at 的核心模型

to移动 → 目的地go to Paris
in在范围 / 空间内部live in Paris
at在某个地点 / 活动at the party

to = movement

in / at = position

4. have been to

We say (I’ve) been to a place or an event:

  • I’ve been to Italy four times, but I’ve never been to Rome.
  • Amanda has never been to a football match in her life.

have been to = 去过

I’ve been to Italy.

Have you ever been to Japan?

B. get and arrive

6. get to

We say get to a place:

  • They got to the hotel at midnight.
  • What time did you get to the party?

这里:

get to = arrive at / reach

What time did you get to work?

5. arrive 不使用 to

We say:

arrive in ...

or:

arrive at ...

not arrive to

arrive to Shanghai

arrive to the airport

arrive in Shanghai

arrive at the airport

We say arrive in a town or country:

  • They arrived in Madrid / in Spain a week ago.

arrive in China

arrive in Shanghai

arrive in London

arrive in France

For other places (buildings etc.) or events, we say arrive at:

  • What time did you arrive at the hotel / at the airport / at the party?

例如:

arrive at the station

arrive at the airport

arrive at the hotel

arrive at the party

8. arrive in / at 的判断

大范围 → in

arrive in Shanghai

arrive in China

因为:

Shanghai / China = geographical area

arrive at the airport

arrive at the hotel

arrive at the station

因为:

airport / hotel / station = location point

9. get to vs arrive in / at

get to大多数地点

I got to Shanghai yesterday.

I arrived in Shanghai yesterday.

但是:

I arrived to Shanghai.

错误。

C. home

We say:

  • go home
  • come home
  • get home
  • arrive home
  • on the way home

There is no preposition.

We do not say to home.

Examples:

  • What time did you get home? (not get to home)

  • I met Lisa on my way home.

10. home

go to work

go to school

go to the airport

但是:

go home

不是:

go to home

同样:

come home

不是:

come to home

get home

不是:

get to home

arrive home

不是:

arrive at home

go homego to home
come homecome to home
get homeget to home
arrive homearrive at home
on my way homeon my way to home

I’m at home.

at home

12. go home vs be at home

比较:

I’m going home.

movement → home

不使用 to

I’m at home.

这里:

position

at home

go home

be at home

D. into

16. go into / get into

go into / get into ... etc. = enter

例如:

enter a room

enter a building

enter a car

进入……里面

Examples:

  • I opened the door, went into the room and sat down.
  • A bird flew into the kitchen through the window.
  • Every month my salary is paid directly into my bank account.

in + to

outside → inside

She went into the room.

outside → 🚪 → inside

所以:

into = movement to the inside

14. in vs into

in = position

She is in the room.

into = movement

She went into the room.

in在里面

in = position

into = movement

15. to vs into

to

I went to the room.

to 只强调:

into

I went into the room.

to = toward / destination

into = enter / inside

With some verbs, especially:

  • go
  • get
  • put

we often use in instead of into.

Examples:

  • She got in the car and drove away.

or:

  • She got into the car and drove away.

  • I read the letter and put it back in the envelope.

17. get in the car vs get into the car

get in the car

get into the car

get in

Get in the car.

上车。

18. into 的反义词:out of

The opposite of into is:

out of

Example:

  • She got out of the car and went into a shop.

into = 外 → 内

out of = 内 → 外

例如:

go into the room

come out of the room

19. bus / train / plane 使用 get on / get off

For:

  • buses
  • trains
  • planes

we usually say:

get on

and:

get off

Examples:

  • She got on the bus and I never saw her again.
  • You need to get off (the train) at the next station.

20. car

car / taxi

通常:

get in

get out of

例如:

get in the car

上车。

get out of the car

下车。

bus / train / plane

通常:

get on

get off

例如:

get on the bus

get off the bus

21. 为什么 car 用 in,而 bus 用 on?

car / taxi

in a car

in a taxi

get in / get into

get out of

bus / train / plane

on a bus

on a train

on a plane

get on

get off

in a carget in / into the carget out of the car
in a taxiget in / into the taxiget out of the taxi
on a busget on the busget off the bus
on a trainget on the trainget off the train
on a planeget on the planeget off the plane

position(位置)

和:

movement(移动)

ininto
atto

例如:

I’m at the airport.

I’m going to the airport.

I’m in the room.

I’m going into the room.

at

point

at the airport

to

movement → point

go to the airport

in

inside

in the room

into

movement → inside

go into the room

at = 在某点to = 到某点
in = 在内部into = 进入内部

at → point

in → inside / area

on → surface

to → toward a destination

into → move inside

out of → move outside

onto → move onto a surface

off → move away from a surface

❌ go in France

应该:

go to France

❌ arrive to France

应该:

arrive in France

❌ arrive to the airport

应该:

arrive at the airport

❌ go to home

应该:

go home

❌ get to home

应该:

get home

❌ get on the car

get in the car

❌ get in the bus

get on the bus

Unit 126

to = 到

at = 在某个点

in = 在里面

into = 进入里面

go / come / get / arrive home → home

get in / out of a car

get on / off a bus, train or plane
