A. 有些名词既可以是可数名词,也可以是不可数名词
许多名词有时是 countable(可数),有时是 uncountable(不可数)。
通常情况下:
可数和不可数时,意思会有所不同。
1. noise
Countable:a noise
Did you hear a noise just now? (= a specific noise)
你刚才听到一个声音了吗?
这里的:
a noise
表示:
一个具体的声音
因此是可数名词。
Uncountable:noise
I can’t work here. There’s too much noise. (= noise in general)
我没法在这里工作。这里的噪音太大了。
这里的:
noise
表示:
噪音这种整体概念
因此是不可数名词。

2. paper
Countable:a paper
I bought a paper to read. (= a newspaper)
我买了一份报纸来看。
这里:
a paper = a newspaper
表示“一份报纸”,所以可以数。
Uncountable:paper
I need some paper to write on. (= material for writing on)
我需要一些纸来写东西。
这里的:
paper
表示:
纸这种材料
因此不可数。

3. hair
Countable:a hair
There’s a hair in my soup! (= one single hair)
我的汤里有一根头发!
这里强调:
one single hair
所以 hair 是可数的。
Uncountable:hair
You’ve got very long hair. (not hairs) (= all the hair on your head)
你的头发很长。
这里的 hair 表示:
头上的头发整体
因此不可数。

4. room
Countable:a room
This is a nice room. (= a room in a house)
这是一个很漂亮的房间。
这里:
room = 房间
所以是可数名词。
Uncountable:room
You can’t sit here. There isn’t room. (= space)
你不能坐这里。这里没有空间了。
这里:
room = space
表示“空间”,所以不可数。

5. experience
Countable:an experience / experiences
I had some interesting experiences while I was travelling. (= things that happened to me)
我旅行的时候有过一些有趣的经历。
这里的:
experience = 一次具体的经历
所以可以数:
an experience two experiences some experiences
Uncountable:experience
I was offered the job because I had a lot of experience. (not experiences) (= experience of that type of job)
因为我有很多相关工作经验,所以得到了这份工作。
这里:
experience = 经验
表示积累下来的知识、技能、经验,因此不可数。

6. time
Countable:a time

这里:
a great time
表示“一段愉快的时光”。
Uncountable:time
I can’t wait. I don’t have time.
我不能等了。我没有时间。
这里的:
time = 时间
是不可数名词。

饮料通常是不可数名词
例如:
- coffee
- tea
- juice
- beer
作为饮料本身时,通常是不可数名词。
例如:
I don’t like coffee very much.
我不太喜欢咖啡。
这里表示:
coffee 这种饮料
所以不可数。
但是点餐时可以变成可数
我们也可以说:
a coffee (= a cup of coffee)
一杯咖啡
two coffees (= two cups of coffee)
两杯咖啡
例如:
Two coffees and an orange juice, please.
请给我两杯咖啡和一杯橙汁。
这里实际上省略了:
two cups of coffee
所以:
coffee 本身不可数
但是在餐厅、咖啡店等场景中:
a coffee = a cup of coffee
B. 通常为不可数的名词
下面这些名词通常都是 uncountable nouns(不可数名词):

7. 这些名词通常不能直接使用 a / an
例如 bread:
不能说:
a bread
应该说:
I’m going to buy some bread.
我要去买一些面包。
或者使用单位:
a loaf of bread
一条 / 一个面包
所以:
some bread
或者:
a loaf of bread
而不是:
a bread
再例如 weather:
Enjoy your holiday! I hope you have good weather.
假期愉快!希望你遇到好天气。
不能说:
a good weather
因为 weather 是不可数名词。
8. 这些名词通常没有复数形式
因此通常不能说:
breads
furnitures
informations
例如:
Where are you going to put all your furniture?
你准备把所有家具放在哪里?
不是:
furnitures
再例如:
Let me know if you need more information.
如果你需要更多信息,请告诉我。
不是:
informations
news 是不可数名词
这是一个特别容易出错的词。
虽然 news 以 -s 结尾,但是:
news ≠ 复数名词
它是:
uncountable noun
所以:
The news was unexpected.
这个消息出乎意料。
不是:
The news were unexpected.
核心记忆
news + singular verb
例如:
The news is good.
The news was surprising.
而不是:
The news are good.
travel 是不可数名词
作为名词时:
travel
表示:
travelling in general
即:
旅行这种活动 / 泛指旅行
因此通常不可数。
例如:
They spend a lot of money on travel.
他们在旅行上花很多钱。
不要用 a travel 表示“一次旅行”
一般不说:
a travel
如果想表达“一次旅行”,通常使用:
a trip
或者:
a journey
例如:
We had a very good trip/journey.
我们进行了一次非常愉快的旅行。
不是:
We had a very good travel.

work 表示“工作”这个整体概念时不可数。

10. view vs scenery
Countable

view 可以表示从某个地方看到的一个具体景象,因此可数。

scenery 是不可数名词。
所以不能说:
a scenery
11. day vs weather
Countable
It’s a nice day today.
今天天气不错 / 今天是个好日子。
day 是可数名词。
Uncountable
It’s nice weather today.
今天天气很好。
weather 不可数。
不能说:
a nice weather
12. bag vs baggage / luggage
Countable
We had a lot of bags.
我们有很多包。
可以说:
a bag two bags many bags
Uncountable
We had a lot of baggage/luggage.
我们有很多行李。
baggage 和 luggage 通常不可数。
不能说:
a luggage
two luggages
如果想数,可以说:
a piece of luggage
一件行李
two pieces of luggage
两件行李
13. chair vs furniture
Countable
These chairs are mine.
这些椅子是我的。
chair 是可数名词。
Uncountable
This furniture is mine.
这些家具是我的。
furniture 是不可数名词。
因此:
furniture is
而不是:
furniture are
如果要表达“一件家具”:
a piece of furniture
两件家具:
two pieces of furniture
14. suggestion vs advice
Countable
That’s a good suggestion.
这是一个好建议。
suggestion 是可数名词。
可以说:
a suggestion
two suggestions
Uncountable
That’s good advice.
这是个好建议。
advice 是不可数名词。
不能说:
an advice
如果要表达“一条建议”:
a piece of advice
两条建议:
two pieces of advice

15. car vs traffic
Countable

car 是可数名词。

traffic 是不可数名词。
所以:

而不是:
There were a lot of traffic.

最终思维模型
第一层:先判断这个词当前表达的是什么概念
不要只问:
“这个单词是可数还是不可数?”
更准确的思维应该是:
“这个单词在当前这个意思下,是可数还是不可数?”
因为同一个单词可能发生变化。
第二层:具体个体 / 一次事件 → 往往可数
例如:
a noise
一个具体声音
a hair
一根具体头发
an experience
一次具体经历
a room
一个具体房间
这些都可以理解为:
一个、两个、三个……
因此可数。
第三层:整体 / 材料 / 抽象概念 → 往往不可数
例如:
noise
噪音整体
paper
纸这种材料
hair
头发整体
experience
经验
room
空间
这些不是在强调一个具体单位,因此通常不可数。
一句话记忆
具体的一个东西 / 一次事情 → 往往可数
整体、材料、抽象概念 → 往往不可数
例如:
a hair = 一根头发 hair = 头发整体
an experience = 一次经历 experience = 经验
a room = 一个房间 room = 空间
a paper = 一份报纸 paper = 纸张材料
所以不要机械地记:
“hair 是可数还是不可数?”
而应该记:
a hair = 一根头发 → 可数
hair = 头发整体 → 不可数
